Stubs: Citizen Kane - A Second Screening

There is a real difference between watching a film on home video and watching it in a theater. This recently happened to me with Citizen Kane, which recently was part of a Fathom Event, celebrating its 85th anniversary. I had previously reviewed the film for this blog, based on watching it on disc. I won’t go through the history of the film, or a detailed synopsis, please see the previous post for that.

Classic Hollywood films, of which this would definitely count, were made to be seen in theaters and that is really the only way to get the full experience filmmakers intended. While I had seen the film several times, I did get a different appreciation for it, seeing it in a theater.

We were treated before the film with an introduction by Leonard Maltin, the well-known film critic/historian. In his prologue, he lauded Citizen Kane as the greatest film ever made. That’s a high honor to lay on something and the only way to prove that is to watch the film.

If you’re a devotee of Doctor Who, you’ve no doubt heard of the Daleks. They are almost as old as the franchise themselves. They made their first appearance in the second serial of the First Doctor (William Hartnell). In the serial, the Doctor, his granddaughter Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford), and her teachers Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) land in an alien jungle and are captured by the Daleks, a race of mutated creatures who survive off the radiation that remains in the atmosphere after a nuclear war with their enemies. As the group attempt to escape the Daleks, they discover more about the planet and the ensuing war, and attempt to broker a peace.

Doctor Who, at this time, was still relatively new and many characteristics of the Doctor wouldn’t be recognizable to fans of the series today. The character hadn’t really been thoroughly established; not yet a Time Lord, as an example.

Amicus Productions bought an option to make the story and two sequels from Terry Nation, the writer of the story, and the BBC, which produced the series, for £500. With a budget of £180,000, the film went into production at Shepperton Studios in April 1965. It was released in the UK on August 23, 1965.

As a follow up to his Academy Award winning Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan chose a text that dates back to the 8^th century B.C. attributed to Homer, a Greek poet. It is a sort of sequel to The Iliad, which centers on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles during the last year of the Trojan War. It’s follow-up, The Odyssey, chronicles the ten-year journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, back to his home after the fall of Troy.

It seems a little surprising that such a film based on a 2,800-year-old poem would arrive with such anticipation. Most tickets for its opening weekend sold out months in advance. But that is the pull of Christopher Nolan, the director behind Oppenheimer but also such films as Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002), Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and Tenet (2020). He has a following few modern directors have, save, perhaps, Steven Spielberg.

If you ever wondered where the term "documentary" comes from, you need look no further than a contemporary review of this film. Scottish filmmaker, film theorist, and critic John Grierson, writing for The New York Sun under the name “The Moviegoer”, coined the term in his review on February 8, 1926, the day after Moana opened. Grierson is considered by many to be the father of British and Canadian documentary film. Despite that, many view the film as more docufiction.

Supergirl aka Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) with her best friend, Krypto.

 

Something that Supergirl has in common with John Wick is that nobody hurts her dog. Just like Wick slayed a whole hell of a lot of people because someone killed his dog, Supergirl aka Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) goes on a revenge tour when her dog Krypto is left incapacitated by Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaert), the leader of the Brigands, a rowdy group of space pirates. Along the way, she picks up Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridle), a youing woman who has witnessed Krem kill her father, mother and brother, and is out for her own revenge. Add to that Kara has just three days to find Krem, who has stolen her spaceship, and return with the antidote to save Krypto, a daunting task.

Supergirl is based on DC comics and utilizes characters that would be well-known to longtime readers. How accurate it is to the comics themselves is not something I'm equipped to answer.

The film has not opened as well as had previously expected, but some of the blame on that can be the rather lackluster intro Superman (2025), which is supposed to have kicked off a revival of the DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn. But some of it has to do with the film itself.

The toys are back in town and it’s good to see them.

Honestly, I was a little nervous about this film, based on fears that the Toy Story franchise would eventually run out of steam. But after 31 years, I’m happy to say that it can still make me cry.

As a writer, you’re often advised to write what you know, and the novel A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, may be a good example. Responding to an International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement recruitment effort, an 18-year-old Hemingway signed to be an ambulance driver with the American Red Cross Motor Corps in Italy. Within two months of landing in Italy, Hemingway was badly wounded in mortar fire and would spend six months recovering in the Red Cross hospital in Milan, where he fell in love with a nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky, seven years his senior. The two would become engaged but she would break off the engagement after Hemingway came back to the States. That experience would be the basis for his third novel, A Farewell to Arms first serialized in Scribner's Magazine (May-Oct, 1929).

I’m a big fan of mysteries, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one in which a flock of sheep help solve a murder. But that’s the plot of The Sheep Detectives, a new film that’s currently in release. And, while it may sound far-fetched, the film is very much worth watching, and in fact, I’m looking forward to seeing it again.

Lauren Weisberger was 26 when she turned her experience as an assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour into a book. The best-selling novel, The Devil Wears Prada, spent six months on New York Times's bestseller list. Fox bought the rights to the novel even before it was finished. Carla Hacken, then the studio's executive vice president, had only seen the first hundred pages of the manuscript and an outline for the rest of the plot.

As is common practice in Hollywood, four screenwriters worked on the property. Peter Hedges wrote the first draft; another writer passed. Paul Rudnick did some work on Miranda's scenes, followed by a Don Roos rewrite. Aline Brosh McKenna produced a draft that struck a balance for Finerman and Frankel, whose notes were incorporated into a final version, rearranging the plot significantly, and focusing the story on the conflict between Andy and Miranda.

Meryl Streep was not the first choice for Miranda. She was initially not considered because no one knew she could be funny. Before her, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, and Catherine Zeta-Jones were considered before her. Signing Streep allowed Fox to greenlight the project.

If you were a fan of the original TV series, Mission: Impossible (1966-1973), you were definitely interested when Paramount announced it was bringing the story to the big screen. You might have been drawn in for its star Tom Cruise, or the script by Robert Towne, or the direction by Briana DePalma, but this was a film designed to put people in seats. But if you were a fan of the original series, you might have qualms with the adaptation.

Stubs - Little Amélie or the Character of Rain

Sometimes, it takes awards season to make you aware of the films that were released, which is what brought Little Amélie or the Character of Rain to my attention. This year, it was one of five films nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. That awareness took the film from unknown to one of my favorite animated films of the year and my personal front runner to win that award.

Stubs - They Call It Sin

If you’re ever looking for a film to watch, the old adage "you can’t judge a book by its cover" can come into play if you go simply by the title. Case in point, They Call It Sin from First National. I saw the title in the guide for TCM and saw that Loretta Young was the star. Young had been the lead of many racy pre-code films and the promise of one with this title was too much to pass up.

Stubs - Samaritan

A spec script that no one wanted at the time, Samaritan, was turned into a comic book of the same name by its writer, Bragi Schut, at Mythos Comics, an indie publisher he started with Lewis Fenton. After putting out two issues, the story became known to Sylvester Stallone, of Rocky fame, who was looking for a project for an older actor. The original script was then acquired by MGM, in 2019, but as a result, the story became owned by them and by Stallone, and the comic book had to be shuttered after only two issues.

The production was co-produced by Stallone’s Balboa Productions, and began in Atlanta on February 26, 2020, only to be shut down on March 14 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It wouldn’t begin again until October 8, 2020. With a push back in production, the release date also had to be pushed back from November 20, 2020 to August 26, 2022. By then MGM had been purchased by Amazon. The release, which had been planned for theaters, ended up on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Perhaps proving that you can wait too long between sequels, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the sequel to This is Spinal Tap (1984), came and went at the box office so fast that if you waited more than a week or so, it was already out of theaters. Budgeted at $22.6 million, the film earned only $3.2 million upon release on September 12, 2025. While commercially a failure, the film has apparently found a second life on HBO Max.

What is the highest grossing film of Paul Thomas Anderson’s career, a possible Academy Award contender and still considered a box-office failure? The answer is his 2025 film One Battle After Another, loosely based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon. A modernized version of the novel, with some of Anderson’s own stories incorporated into the narrative, One Battle After Another deals with revolutionaries of the early 2000’s, the French 75, and how actions 16 plus years ago still have consequences.

To be honest, this wasn’t necessarily a film I would have chosen to see. Some of that has to do with Leonardo DiCaprio, who is the star of the film. While he’s often called a great actor, I haven’t really been a fan of the films he’s starred in. However, because the scuttlebutt seems to indicate the film will be popular during awards season, which is now until the Academy Awards, it seemed like one to watch, which I recently did on HBO Max.

Stubs - Blackmail (1929)

1929 was not only a crucial year in Hollywood history, with the coming of sound, but was also in Britain. With local film production in decline and the British film industry having to compete with the more polished and financially successful American studio product, British films were fighting for survival.

That year, Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail began as a silent film production. However, the producer, John Maxwell, was anxious to cash in on the new technology and gave Hitchcock the okay to reshoot some of the film as, what was called back then, a “talkie.” However, it has been reported that Hitchcock wanted to reshoot the entire film with sound. However, the finished film was a combination of the two technologies.

The first six and half minutes of the sound version are lifted from the silent film. So much so, that at one point you might be wonder if you’re watching the silent version before you hear non-synchronized dialogue. There are other sequences of the sound film that are also from the silent version as well.

There was some other obstacles to get over, including the fact that the lead actress, Prague-born Anny Ondra, had a noticeable Czech accent, and according to some, a "reedy voice", that was judged unsuitable for the film. With sound in its infancy, something like dubbing was not possible. Rather that re-casting the lead, Hitchcock hired actress Joan Barry to read the dialogue off-camera while Ondra lip-synched her lines.

2025 - The Highlights (lionsroar)

A look at films watched during 2025 but not necessarily released in 2025.

The Highlights (2025) (In No Particular Order)

Thunderbolts* (2025) - My loyalty to the MCU has definitely waned, so I was happily surprised when two new films were released. Of the two, I think this is my favorite, the other being The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Thunderbolts* doesn't take itself too seriously and has good acting, and a good story. Make more like these, Disney, and you might win me back.

Frankenstein (2025) - While not a perfect retelling of the novel, this is by far the closest we may get. I wish del Toro hadn't added and changed characters, which he did, I'll give him credit for attempting to tell the entire story, which is much more sweeping than the original film and it's sequels would have you believe. That said, Boris Karloff is still the better monster.

Paddington in Peru (2024) - What's not to like about Paddington the Bear? While perhaps not quite as good as the previous two filns, this one seems like a worthy successor to the franchise.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025) - All good things come to an end and a final stay in this world is something to enjoy. Time to move on, but with a tear in your eye.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (2025) - While maybe not a movie I would have sought out on my own, this seems to be a good companion to the first season of the anime series.

Disappointments (2025) (In No Particular Order)

Superman (2025) - This is not a really good introduction to Superman. The assumption is you know the backstory, so if you don't, you're out of luck. Superman also needs the help of other heroes to win, which is a little disappointing. The film feels sort of like a sequel as well as a prequel to a future Justice League film.

Elio (2025) - Pixar tries and fails again to make a compelling story for all ages. Perhaps young kids might like this, which may help it with Academy voters, but this is not the best animated film by far. If you're looking for a young boy wanting to meet aliens, I would recommend the anime series Dan Da Dan.

 

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: At a Confessional (2025) - This makes the list solely due to the composer not composing the music but using AI instead. Creative people need to create and not rely on shortcuts to get a paycheck.

The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2025) - Obviously made by people who loved the original Warner Bros. cartoons, this film fails to capture the magic.

If there was a holiday you wouldn’t associate with film noir, I would think it would be Christmas. However, there are several including Christmas Holiday (1944), Cover Up (1949), Roadblock (1951), I, the Jury (1953), and Blast of Silence (1961). One of the bleakest, is the last one on the list, Blast of Silence.

Shot without permits and made on a shoestring budget of $28,000, filmmakers used borrowed equipment and shot the film in twenty-two days spread over a four-month period, including during Hurricane Donna (September 10–12, 1960), the only hurricane of the 20th century to blanket the entire East Coast from south Florida to Maine. The film was written and directed by the lead actor, Allen Baron, who really had no film experience prior to this.

Baron hadn’t intended to be the lead either, having written the part for his friend Peter Falk, but a paid gig made him unavailable. In typical film noir style, the film is narrated. The difference is that it is not the voice of the main character, but rather an observer-type read by blacklisted actor Lionel Stander for a fee of $500. The narration, written after the film was completed, was the work of blacklisted writer Waldo Salt, using the name Mel Davenport.

Henry. Produced by André Hakim. Run time: 117 minutes. Black and White. USA Comedy, Drama, Anthology, Christmas.

While it wasn’t common practice for studios to make a series of short stories into movies, 20^th Century-Fox thought that the writings of William Sydney Porter, also known as O. Henry, were worthy of such a treatment. That is not to say anthology films were not made; they have been made frequently in India, Italy, and Great Britain, to name a few. Anthology films had been made prior to this one in Hollywood, most notably If I Had a Million (1932), produced by Paramount and including a segment directed by Ernst Lubitsch.

That said, it is thought that three films produced in the UK were the inspiration for O. Henry’s Full House: Quartet (1948) was based on stories by Somerset Maugham, who also personally introduced each one. Quartet was such a success, two sequels were made Trio (1950) and Encore (1951), also based on Maugham short stories. Paramount picked up the sequels for distribution in the U.S and the films were both critical and commercial successes.

Seeing as each segment was written, directed and starred different people, we’ll take each segment of the film one at a time.

Before there was Cher or Madonna, there was Margo. Born María Marguerita Guadalupe Teresa Estela Bolado Castilla y O'Donnell, in Mexico City, Margo began her career as a dancer, at age 9, working for her uncle Xavier Cugat and his band in performances at nightclubs in Mexico. While accompanying Cugat and his orchestra at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, Margo was discovered by producer and director Ben Hecht and screenwriter Charles MacArthur, who cast the 17-year-old performer as the lead in their film Crime Without Passion. She would also have a memorable part in Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon (1937).
